This sink is actually patterned after an antique East Indian cooking
vessel called an "Urli" (oo-ly). They were produced in many different
sizes and are known to be as big as five feet in diameter! The
Urli was only used on special occasions such as a wedding or a
religious holiday. Typically the source of heat was a wood burning
fire. They were carefully stored and handed down from Mother to
Daughter and often included in a bride's trousseau. Many families
still use Urli's but for the most part they have been replaced
by stainless steel pots.
Each sink is carefully sand cast and hand finished
in bronze. All bronze sinks have a living finish, which means
that the sink will continue to darken with use. In India the Urli
is dark on the outside and lighter in the inside where the food
was prepared.
Proper care is somewhat personal. If the sink is
presently or gets too dark for your taste it can easily by lightened
with the green side of a scotch bright pad. If you prefer it darker,
just give it some time and use. But typically a simple cleaning
with soap and water is all that is needed.
